Abercrombie & Fitch models to early graves

Friday The 13th says and does everything abercrombie and fitch it needs to in the first half-hour, then slowly begins to outstay its welcome. A few decent kills (particular a sequence with an out-of-control speedboat on a lake) resuscitate your interest, but there are no characters you particularly want to live. Thus, we turn to Jason to be our protagonist and send these abercrombie and fitch models to early graves, but that a jump of loyalty I can't personally make. It can be fun to support the villain in slasher films, but Jason's too dull to be worth the effort. He was far more effective in Freddy Vs. Jason, a surprisingly robust abercrombie and fitch movie also written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, that showed more imagination and subtext than anything here. It's puzzling to me how these writers mined sympathy for brutish Jason Vorhees when he went toe-to-toe with child-killer Freddy Krueger (especially through his fear of water and childhood harassment), but then forget all that for his solo reboot. Jason appears to have conquered his aqua-phobia, for instance, just when the film sorely needed an Achilles Heel to toy with.

Same-store sales plummet at Abercrombie & Fitch

abercrombie and fitch (NYSE: ANF) announced on Thursday that its same-store sales plummeted 29% in August. These results were worse than the expected drop of 23.9%.

Sales in all of its divisions were worse than expected, with sales at the abercrombie and fitch flagship store plunging 26%. Sales dropped 32% at Hollister, 37% at Ruehl (which will close at the year's end), and 26% at the company's children's retail outlet.

ANF is also going to face quite a hurdle with the holiday shopping season approaching. Will parents be willing to drop $85 for a sweater, or nearly $100 for a pair of jeans for their kids? Some will , but I'm guessing that many won't. The same thing with the back-to-school shopping season -- how many parents are willing to pay $35 abercrombie and fitch for a t-shirt because it says Hollister? Again, some will, but I bet many won't. Will the stock be able to withstand further same-store sales disappointments? We could soon find out.

ANF opened at $31.30 this morning, abercrombie and fitch about 2% lower than Wednesday's closing price. The biggest danger for the stock is a technical hurdle that it recently cleared but will now have to face again. Shares of the retailer were relying on the support of their 10-month moving average, but this trendline should now be in a position to act as resistance. This fact doesn't mean that the stock is doomed for failure, but resistance isn't exactly what ANF can use right now. The stock had actually put together abercrombie and fitch a nice little run starting early in the year, but that could now come to an end.

Abercrombie & Fitch Must Pay for Harassing Former Employee

abercrombie and fitch is going to need to push some extra moose-emblazoned button-downs and hoodies today.
Britain's Central London Employment Tribunal awarded former employee Riam Dean £9,014 (approximately $14,696) after ruling that the clothing giant had harassed her about her prosthetic arm, reports the Daily Mail.

Dean, who worked at the abercrombie and fitch London flagship store, sued the company for discrimination against her disability, claiming bosses banished her to the stockroom rather than use her on the sales floor, and even suggested that she stay out of sight until the colder months, when employee uniforms allowed for more arm coverage.

Though the tribunal did acknowledge that abercrombie and fitch created an "adversely humiliating environment" for Dean -- who quit after just five shifts -- they did not find evidence of direct discrimination, due to the fact that all store employees must adhere to the in-house looks policy dictating appearance.

Hey, £9,014 could buy a ton of rugby shirts, but something tells us Dean will take her money elsewhere.

Abercrombie and Fitch lifestyle

abercrombie and fitch is not a lifestyle! It is an illusion of one. You're being sold to, and taken for a fool because of how cheaply made their clothes are. They're abercrombie and fitch acutally making you think that ripped jeans are worth paying over $100 for?

If people want a casual lifestyle, then stop obsessing over clothes, and how you look. Don't worry about it, most people look fine. It's only when we compare ourselves abercrombie and fitch to others, when we feel bad!

abercrombie and fitch in in just about every mall in the nation, and now they're all over the world. Our country has a huge obesity epidemic on its hands, and our teenagers are being marketed to by these people to think that they need to live up to this ideal of beauty that they portray.

abercrombie and fitch is not a lifestyle, it's a business. People on the East Coast, want the West Coast style, etc- so they sell it to you in paper thin shirts that rip and shrink and jeans with holes in them. In reality...nobody really dresses like that, and you end up walking around looking like a carbon copy of everyone else who has bought into the hype!

Abercrombie & Fitch moves to 2Q loss

A chastened
abercrombie and fitch . said Friday it is actively lowering prices and trying to catch up with fashion trends such as dresses as the retailer reported a fiscal second-quarter loss and its third straight quarter of double-digit sales declines. The preppy teen retailer entered the recession determined to wait it out, maintaining its relatively high prices and investing internationally. But consumers have abandoned abercrombie and fitch for lower-priced options such as Aeropostale Inc. and American Eagle Outfitters Inc.

In response, the company has cut jobs abercrombie and fitch and shuttered its even higher-priced Ruehl chain aimed at 20- and 30-somethings.

CEO Mike Jeffries said the company made a misstep with Ruehl.

"The biggest learning from Ruehl is that as a company, we don't do 'mature' well," Jeffries said in a conference call with investors.

Jeffries said the company has introduced lower prices and will lower prices even more in coming quarters.

"We continue to be confronted with very challenging conditions during the second quarter," Jeffries said. "Consumer spending patterns domestically continue to be dictated by cost and value propositions, and this is clearly a headwind for our premium brands."

In the quarter ended ended Aug. 1, abercrombie and fitch loss totaled $26.7 million, or 30 cents per share. That compares with profit of $77.8 million, or 87 cents per share, a year ago.

Quarterly results included $24.4 million in charges for the Ruehl closing and store asset impairment charges. The company would not provide a per-share loss excluding the closure. However, Thomas Weisel Partners analyst Liz Dunn estimated the loss excluding one-time items would be about 8 cents per share.

Analysts forecast a loss of 7 cents per share. Analyst estimates typically exclude one-time items.

Sales dropped 23 percent to $648.5 million, but that topped analyst expectations of $646.5 million.

New Albany, Ohio-based Abercrombie & Fitch Co., which operates of namesake stores as well as abercrombie, its children's apparel brand; surf-themed Hollister; and intimate apparel store Gilly Hicks, said sales in stores open at least one year, a key retail metric known as same-store sales, dropped 30 percent. Same-store sales fell 27 percent at namesake stores, 29 percent at abercrombie and fitch stores, 33 percent at Hollister and 31 percent at Ruehl.

Known for preppy offerings such as jeans and polo shirts, Abercrombie said it is working to improve its fashion offerings, particulary for women. Dresses and belts have been selling well.

"We are always pushing ourselves ... but have admittedly missed some of the fashion opportunities that drove the business in the spring," Jefferies said.

Prices are also in flux. The company said the average prices will be lower in the third quarter and upcoming quarters than the second quarter.

"We are planning to deliver greater reductions in (average unit retail price) for the fall season, but we'll continue to review pricing on an ongoing basis," Jefferies said.

The company slashed marketing, general and administrative costs during the quarter, down 19 percent to $88.7 million from $109 million last year.

The closing of Ruehl, its store focused on handbags and other accessories and aimed at older shoppers, should be complete by the end of the fiscal year.

Jeffries said the company's Gilly Hicks intimate apparel brand, which was skewing older, will now be aimed at the company's 20-year-old target market.

"We are young, we're sexy, we're controversial at times," Jeffries said. "That's what we know how to do, and that's the business that we own here and are comfortable that we can around the world."

Abercrombie had "pretty decent results, better than we expected," said Keybanc Capital Markets analyst Ed Yruma. "They're getting traction on changes in their promotional strategy, including being more focused on denim and on opening price points."

Shares rose 99 cents, or 3 percent, to $33.95 during morning trading.

Abercrombie Denied Federal Money Transfer

Congressman Neil abercrombie and fitch run for governor took a big financial hit Tuesday.

The Campaign Spending Commission voted not to let him transfer more than $900,000 from his federal campaign to his state campaign.

There's no question the $900,000 means a lot to the campaign, but Congressman abercrombie and fitchisn't giving up on being able to use that money.

The congressman hosted a meet and chat at Waipahu Intermediate School tonight. He was all smiles during the meeting even though the Campaign Spending Commission voted unanimously against him. He says there's a double standard and there are different rules for different people alluding to the fact that Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann was allowed to transfer more than $650,000 left over from his mayoral race to his gubernatorial campaign.

"Without that money can you still win?" KGMB9 asked.

"The money is still able to come. They can try to make it difficult. We'll be dealing with it in court," responded Congressman abercrombie and fitch.

"(Are you) angry?" KGMB9 asked.

"No sense being angry. What good does that do? It's a matter of sticking to your principles and moving ahead in the venue that's available to us which is the courts," said Abercrombie.

abercrombie and fitch campaign says it’s also weighing the other options besides going to court including giving the federal money back to the original donors and then asking them to re-donate again to the state campaign. There's also the possibility he may give the money to charity.

Congressman abercrombie and fitch has about $250,000 left in his state campaign. That’s well below Mayor Hannemann, who has $1.16 million and Lt. Governor Duke Aiona, who has $871,000, but Abercrombie says there's still plenty of time to fund raise.

Dozens of Abercrombie & Fitch

By the mid-1990s, there were dozens of abercrombie and fitch stores in the United States. On September 26, 1996, The Limited, Inc. took abercrombie & Fitch public on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker symbol “ANF” and with the per share offering as $16. In late 1990s, the company began to opt building stores only averaging between 8,000 to 20,000 square feet (700 to 2,000 m2) in high-volume retail centers around the country. It also launched the canoe store prototype of white facade and interior gray walls to accommodate the growth of its brand.
In 1997, abercrombie and fitch launched A&F Quarterly. The publication included photography, interview sand articles about sex, pop culture, and other teen interests. In 1998, the company introduced its first subsidiary, abercrombie. The concept was designed as the abercrombie & Fitch for a younger clientele between the ages on 7-14. In 1999 began a 3-year-long class action lawsuit in which
abercrombie and fitch was one of several American retailers involved for its sweatshops in Saipan. Revenue recorded for abercrombie and fitch at the end of fiscal 1998 was at $805.2 million USD. By 1998, Abercrombie & Fitch went became an independent company, and Mike Jeffries assumed the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.[16] As the brand regained its prominence, industry analysts began to speculate how long abercrombie and fitchwould be able to retain its popularity.

“Field Guide” Bye-Bye , Abercrombie and Fitch stops selling porn.

In matters of foreign policy, Teddy Roosevelt advised, one should speak softly and carry a big stick. Last month tens of thousands of Americans applied that advice to a vexing domestic matter. Their "big stick" was the threat of a nationwide boycott of one of Roosevelt's favorite stores, Abercrombie and Fitch.

The threat worked. Four days before the official start of the Christmas shopping season — Abercrombie, known for overpriced clothes and underdressed models — ordered its 651 stores to stop selling "The Christmas Field Guide," the latest edition of the company's pornographic quarterly magazine. It's evidently the start of a permanent ban on selling the quarterly in stores, and it's evidence that when enough people get mad — and take action — even the most libertine companies will sometimes back down.

Abercrombie's quarterly has long angered parents and others concerned about cultural decay. The 2003 Christmas issue features dozens of naked young men and women in various sexual poses, including group sex. The pictures are accompanied by a column from a "sexpert" who, among other lewd advice, suggests readers engage in oral sex in movie theaters "so long as you do not disturb those around you."

Earlier editions featured pictures of Santa in sadomasochistic poses with his elves, drinking tips, advice on seducing everyone from teachers to nuns, and a recommendation that students "negotiate a special group rate at a local motel, which your entire quad can take advantage of." A&F recently outraged parents by marketing, to seven-year-old girls, thong-style panties featuring slogans like "Eye Candy" and "Wink Wink."

I visited an A&F store at the Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, Maryland last Wednesday. I was planning to write a story about the quarterly, and wanted to see a copy for myself. But when I got to the counter, the sales associate told me they were no longer selling the Christmas issue. This was confirmed by store manager Matt Willard, who said all A&F stores were ordered to stop selling the quarterly last Tuesday. Store managers were given no explanation for the decision, he said.

I called Abercrombie's national headquarters in New Albany, Ohio to confirm this. CEO Mike Jeffries and his staff were not available, but an employee who gave his name as "Brennan" said the company had been, over the last two weeks, received 300 calls per hour from people announcing they were boycotting A&F stores until the clothier stopped selling the quarterly. The decision to yank the Christmas issue from stores was made at the beginning of Thanksgiving week, he added.

Who was behind the boycotts?

"Ever hear of Dr. Dobson?" Brennan asked.

James Dobson of Focus on the Family recently spent a radio program and an appearance on MSNBC's Scarborough Country urging listeners to boycott abercrombie and fitch until it stopped publishing the quarterly.

Dobson was joined in his efforts by former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, Chuck Colson, the American Decency Association (ADA), the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families, and others.

Pressure on A&F may also have come from another source: Corporations that own other stores. Bill Johnson, president of the American Decency Association, says that his group had come up with a unique new strategy for getting a Grand Rapids, Michigan A&F to not only stop selling its raunchy quarterly, but also to get rid of the huge photographs of naked models that decorate the walls of every A&F store.

Discussions with abercrombiea and fitch and the manager of the Rivertown Crossings Mall in Grand Rapids had gone nowhere. So Johnson sent a letter to the managers of all 120 mall stores expressing concerns about what children visiting the mall were being exposed to. He enclosed several photos from A&F's quarterly. Police yourselves, he warned, or we'll urge people to boycott the entire mall — right at the start of the Christmas shopping season.

Johnson immediately heard from two stores, including the manager of one of the mall's largest department stores. In the last two weeks there have been, Johnson says, "significant discussions" between the corporation that owns the department store and Abercrombie, leading the ADA to agree to agree to delay the boycott.

The mainstreaming of porn is nothing new. What outrages many parents is that Abercrombie is deliberately aiming its porn and damaging lifestyle advice, not at dirty old men, but at kids.

The best news is the lasting Christmas gift abercrombie and fitch is giving to America. When I tried to order a "Field Guide" by telephone, an A&F employee told me the company's decision to keep the quarterly out of stores is permanent. She, too, blamed the boycotts. The only people who will have access to the quarterly in future, she added, are those who already have a subscription. It's a huge step forward.

A&F's CEO Mike Jeffries has for years sneered at those who complained about his quarterly's filth. Asking him softly to clean up his act didn't work, but big stick evidently did.

Abercrombie & Fitch's Q3 not so cool

abercrombie and fitch. (NYSE: ANF), the hip clothing store that competes with The Gap, Inc. (NYSE: GPS) and J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP), is no different than any other retailer. Christmas is going to hurt... hurt bad. Make no mistake. And as far as earnings reports goes, the pattern is in: report a decline, then issue some nasty guidance.

Abercrombie reported Q3 numbers today, and according to the press release, net sales decreased 8%, and earnings per diluted share declined 44% to $0.72. As Melly Alazraki reported this morning, that $0.72 beat analyst estimates. But the market could care less. As Melly pointed out, the full-year outlook was cut. The stock sold off upon the news. In fact, as I write this, the stock is down nearly 15%. By the way, if by the time this is published the market is up and Abercrombie's shares are trading in the green (big if, granted), don't even think it's a buy. Put that out of your mind. Did you see the same-store sales? They were down 14% for the quarter. That figure is grabbing the attention of investors, I'm sure. When you see a downturn like that, well, you know things aren't going to turn around quickly.

abercrombie and fitch woes will be with it for a while. Management will find it difficult to strike the right balance between staffing the stores properly and increasing marketing activities. All retailers will be in the same boat. The stock hit a new 52-week low today of $18.83. My guess is that the stock will be as volatile as the market, and that it will trend in a downward direction over the next couple months. Obviously I don't think it's a buy. Broken stock and broken fundamentals aren't a great combo. abercrombie and fitch continues to plan for new store openings in fiscal 2008; perhaps those investments will pay off down the line. For now, the retail sector is doing horribly, competition in the sector is becoming cutthroat as consumer confidence loses value, and I continue to look at only two names -- Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and Target (NYSE: TGT) -- as possible long-term values. Yep, abercrombie and fitch isn't so sexy anymore.

Law Student, Prosthetic Arm, Abercrombie & Fitch

We figured those three phrases alone would be enough to get you to to sit up and take notice. A law student with a prosthetic arm has won her suit for wrongful dismissal against U.S. clothing retailer abercrombie and fitch
after she was ordered to work in the stockroom. Click here for the AP story.

The woman, Riam Dean (pictured), had alleged that she was removed from a London branch’s sales floor because the cardigan she wore to cover her missing left forearm violated Abercrombie’s strict dress code. The 22-year-old testified that her manager taunted her about her disability. Ohio-basedabercrombie and fitch denied this.

A London employment trial ordered abercrombie and fitch to pay Dean about $15,000 in compensation for injured feelings, lost earnings and wrongful dismissal.

According to Dean, she was asked by a company employee if it would be possible “to keep you in the stockroom until the winter uniform arrives.” Dean then received letter saying she had been “erroneously placed on the shop floor.”
